Measuring the Developmental Function of Peer Review: A Multi-Dimensional, Cross-Disciplinary Analysis of Peer Review Reports from 740 Academic Journa…

2021

Reviewers do not only help editors to screen manuscripts for publication in academic journals; they also serve to increase the rigor and value of manuscripts by constructive feedback. However, measuring this developmental function of peer review is difficult as it requires fine-grained data on reports and journals without any optimal benchmark. To fill this gap, we adapted a recently proposed quality assessment tool and tested it on a sample of 1.3 million reports submitted to 740 Elsevier journals in 2018–2020. Results showed that the developmental standards of peer review are shared across areas of research, yet with remarkable differences. Reports submitted to social science and economic…

An Analysis of the Immunomodulatory Properties of Human Spheroids from Adipose-Derived Stem Cells

2023

Aims Current methods to induce tolerance following allotransplantation or in autoimmunity carry significant morbidity, and research is very active in investigating alternative methods which could minimize toxicity. Spheroids from adipose stem cells (SASCs) are increasingly gaining interest, they hold a great proliferative and differentiating potential. An immunomodulatory effect has not been investigated on SASCs yet. In this study, we analysed the immunomodulatory properties of SASCs and compared them to ADSCs. Main methods Adipose stem cells (SASCs and ADSCs) and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were collected from healthy individuals. We analysed the cytokine production and pro…

Optogenetic Control of Bacterial Expression by Red Light

2022

In optogenetics, as in nature, sensory photoreceptors serve to control cellular processes by light. Bacteriophytochrome (BphP) photoreceptors sense red and far-red light via a biliverdin chromophore and, in response, cycle between the spectroscopically, structurally, and functionally distinct Pr and Pfr states. BphPs commonly belong to two-component systems that control the phosphorylation of cognate response regulators and downstream gene expression through histidine kinase modules. We recently demonstrated that the paradigm BphP from Deinococcus radiodurans exclusively acts as a phosphatase but that its photosensory module can control the histidine kinase activity of homologous receptors.…

Translational adaptation to heat stress is mediated by RNA 5‐methylcytosine in Caenorhabditis elegans

2021

Abstract Methylation of carbon‐5 of cytosines (m5C) is a post‐transcriptional nucleotide modification of RNA found in all kingdoms of life. While individual m5C‐methyltransferases have been studied, the impact of the global cytosine‐5 methylome on development, homeostasis and stress remains unknown. Here, using Caenorhabditis elegans, we generated the first organism devoid of m5C in RNA, demonstrating that this modification is non‐essential. Using this genetic tool, we determine the localisation and enzymatic specificity of m5C sites in the RNome in vivo. We find that NSUN‐4 acts as a dual rRNA and tRNA methyltransferase in C. elegans mitochondria. In agreement with leucine and proline bein…

The Saccharomyces cerevisiae zinc finger proteins Msn2p and Msn4p are required for transcriptional induction through the stress response element (STR…

1996

The MSN2 and MSN4 genes encode homologous and functionally redundant Cys2His2 zinc finger proteins. A disruption of both MSN2 and MSN4 genes results in a higher sensitivity to different stresses, including carbon source starvation, heat shock and severe osmotic and oxidative stresses. We show that MSN2 and MSN4 are required for activation of several yeast genes such as CTT1, DDR2 and HSP12, whose induction is mediated through stress-response elements (STREs). Msn2p and Msn4p are important factors for the stress-induced activation of STRE dependent promoters and bind specifically to STRE-containing oligonucleotides. Our results suggest that MSN2 and MSN4 encode a DNA-binding component of the…

Are human Vδ2(pos) T cells really resistant to aging and Human Cytomegalovirus infection?()

2019

In their recent paper, Weili Xu et al. [1] described the different behaviors of Vδ1pos and Vδ2pos T cell subsets in response to lifelong stress and claimed that Vδ2pos T cells are not affected by aging and Human Cytomegalovirus (HCMV) infection. While we agree that these two γδ T cell subsets diverge both in phenotype/function and in tissue distribution, we are somewhat surprised that authors did not take into account the several previously published and contradictory experimental evidence in regards to senescence of Vδ2pos T cells [2,3]. These latter studies reported that HCMV infection not only induces a clonal expansion of a distinct Vγ9neg/Vδ2pos T cell subset, but also determines a con…

1-[(1-ethoxypropylidene)amino]-2-ethyl-4-(4-hydroxybenzyl)imidazol-5(4H)-one.

2012

The racemic title compound, C17H23N3O3, isolated from the reaction of L-(−)-tyrosine hydrazide with triethyl orthopropionate in the presence of a catalytic quantity ofp-toluenesulfonic acid (p-TsOH), crystallizes withZ′ = 1 in a centrosymmetric monoclinic unit cell. The molecule contains two planar fragments, viz.the benzene and imidazole rings, linked by two C—C single bonds. The dihedral angle between the two planes is 59.54 (5)° and the molecule adopts a synclinal conformation. The HOMA (harmonic oscillator model of aromaticity) index, calculated for the benzene ring, demonstrates no substantial interaction between the two π-electron delocalization regions in the molecule. In the crystal …

1,4-Dihydro-1-methyl-4-nitriminopyridine Dihydrate

1998

Molecules of the title compound, C6H7N302.2H20, are almost planar with the NNO2 nitrimino group twisted 8 (1) ° out of the plane of the pyridine ring. The nitrimino group and CsN ring form a conju- gated 7r-electron system. These molecules together with water molecules are arranged in planes, They are con- nected with each other by O--H.-.O, O--H...N and weaker C--H..-O hydrogen bonds. Four water mol- ecules form a planar square (OH..-O--H)2 ring with O-..O distances equal to 2.741 (2) and 2.778(2)A. These rings join pairs of molecular planes into double layers, interacting otherwise by van der Waals forces.
